HOW TO REPLACE A FREELANDER'S DIESEL FUEL INJECTOR

HOW TO REPLACE A FREELANDER'S DIESEL FUEL INJECTOR

by Dave Barker, 4th May 2017

How to

When a Td4 injector fails, it seems logical to replace the set but, given the cost, replacing only the defective injector is the popular option. Dave Barker reports

The owner of this regularly-serviced Freelander was complaining that the vehicle was juddering and had a misfire, especially when the engine was cold. This could be caused by a number of faults with the fuel system. The vehicle was put on Autologic diagnostic test equipment which revealed a fault with the fuelling and identified number four as not delivering fuel correctly. A new injector was fitted and, when the engine was started, it sounded to be running much smoother. It was reconnected to the Autologic which showed all four injectors now working within excepted parameters, and on a test drive there was no longer indication of an juddering or misfiring.

TOOLS:

E-Torx 5, 8 mm, 10 mm, 11 mm spanners and sockets, small pick and posssibly a specially adapted slide-hammer.

TIME: 2 HRS | COST: PRICE £120+

PARTS AND COSTS:

The diesel fuel injector for 2006 Freelander 1 Td4 is part number STC4555. Prices range from around £120 to over £536. Both new and reconditioned parts are available and some injectors are sold on an exchange basis. Always check the part number against your vehicle’s VIN number, as there are some variations depending on year and model, manual or automatic.

WITHDRAWING AN INJECTOR

The workshop manual implies that the injector, after unbolting, should simply lift out from the cylinder head. However, the injector is often seized into the head, and a special tool is needed to assist in removing it.

^ A homemade tool can be produced using the screwed top of an old injector attached to a slide hammer.

^ After unscrewing the electrical connection top from the injector, the home-made slide hammer is screwed onto the injector for its careful removal.

STEP 1

REMOVING THE DEFECTIVE INJECTOR : When the Freelander was connected to Autologic diagnostic equipment, a failed number four fuel injector was indicated.

STEP 2
STEP 2

We removed the three screws that secure the cover protecting the injector wiring and fuel pipes, and lifted the cover off.

STEP 3

Once the injector cover has been removed you can clearly see all four fuel injectors, the fuel pipes and the wiring loom.

STEP 4
STEP 4

The bolts that are holding the fuel injector wiring loom harness bracket to the cylinder head are first released and removed.

The wiring plugs are then disconnected from each of the fuel injectors, and the wiring harness bracket is moved clear of the injectors.
