RANGE ROVER L322 (2002 - 2012)

THE CHOICES

This third-generation Range Rover set a high benchmark for luxury SUVs. A silent limousine on road, yet capable of seeing off a Defender in the mud and tracks. It’s a work of automotive art, both externally and internally. Engine options are 3.0-litre diesel and 4.4-litre petrol V8 from BMW, 4.4-litre Ford/Jaguar-derived petrol V8, supercharged V8, and V8 diesel, all with auto transmission. Independent air suspension using axle cross-over valves to control spring rates gives massive axle articulation off-road.

WHAT TO CHECK

Bodywork stays good, but check for panel edge corrosion around the rear wheel arches. V8 engines with an LPG conversion give good economy, but confirm the conversion has been done by a certified installer and that service checks are up to date. Confirm that everything electrically operated works, and open the rear load space interior panels to check for water leaks. A good service history that is complete and with a franchised or good specialist garage is far more important than low mileage. Good maintenance sets the vehicle up for the future. Some early Td6 diesel models suffered sudden auto gearbox failure, usually after around 80,000 miles. There is no way to predict this, but if a new gearbox has been fitted in the past, there should be no problem.

REASONS TO BUY

Ghostly on-road cruising from the V8, and a respectable performance from the 3-litre BMW diesel with 26mpg. Voluminous space all around you. It’s also a competent tow car. Later TDV8 diesel rivals performance of supercharged V8.

PROBLEMS

V8 is expensive on fuel. Vehicles that have been abused, neglected or have a shoddy service history, invite large bills. Standard road wheels are best; larger sizes with low profile tyres spoil the ride quality. Find a good one though, and there aren’t really any reasons not to buy it.
